The museum boasts a wide collection of masterpieces by the famous Norwegian painter Munch, in a pleasant alternation of famous and less famous works. Together with Van Gogh and Gauguin, Munch has been one of the main protagonists of the expressionism movement, giving a fundamental contribute to the development of modern painting.
The museum collects more than 1100 oil paintings and 18000 drawings, prints and lithographs. Among the most famous works are : the pictorial cycles of the “Frieze of life”, with paintings dedicated to various ages and subjects; “The Kiss” (1897), an emotional representation on the theme of separation; "Vampire” (1917), and the famous work “The Scream”, dated 1893. Both this work and "Madonna" were stolen from the museum in 2004, but were fortunately recovered and exhibited again in the museum.
